As we close out this year and prepare for 2024, many of us think about resolutions – losing weight, exercising more, eating healthier. As the calendar resets, we feel compelled to hit the reset button ourselves. Out with the old habits, in with the new – let’s eat healthier, move our bodies more, and start meditating. This desire is reflected in the enduring popularity of New Year’s resolutions – a tradition that traces back over 4000 years.

Even with the best of intentions, 80% of resolutions fail by February. Why? Because most resolutions are rooted in criticism rather than empowerment. They reflect what we feel we should change, not necessarily what we want to change. And any change motivated by guilt or shame is unsustainable.

But how many times have we made resolutions only to abandon them by February? At Fresh Tri, we believe there’s a better way.

The Problem with Resolutions

Resolutions often come from a place of criticism and negativity. We tell ourselves we haven’t been good enough, so we need to change everything immediately. The problem is that this approach sets us up for failure and disappointment.

Our philosophy is different. We’re here to empower you, not criticize you. We want to help you build healthy habits in a realistic, sustainable way.

Our mission is to disrupt the toxic cycle of unhealthy habits. We know that long-lasting change comes from within, not from a list of rigid rules. We encourage you to take control of your own well-being in a way that works for you.

We invite you to set intentions this year instead of resolutions. Intentions are positive, achievable goals that reflect your personal values. They come from a place of self-love, not self-criticism.

Your intentions might be exercising 2-3 times per week, cooking at home more often, or drinking more water daily. The key is choosing realistic steps that empower you to show up as your best self.

When setting intentions, think about what matters to you. What are your personal definitions of health, happiness, and success? How can you design your habits and routines to reflect those values?

Reimagining Your Intentions

At Fresh Tri, we believe intention-setting is most powerful when tied to inner reflection. So, take some time to check in with yourself before declaring any goals.

Here are a few key things to ponder:

  • What are your motivations? Are you setting this goal for yourself or someone else?
  • How does this intention tie to your values and purpose?
  • Is this goal realistic for your current life circumstances?
  • Do you have the resources and support needed to achieve this goal?

You can set intentions that energize you from within by tuning into your true motivations and needs. You’ll feel inspired, not pressured.

Practical Tips for Intention Success

When setting intentions, we recommend breaking bigger goals into bite-sized steps. For example, if you intend to exercise more, schedule specific days and times each week rather than declaring you’ll work out “every day.”

Start with a manageable step, like a 15-minute walk after dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As this habit sticks, you can build from there. Small, steady steps create lasting change.

We call this iteration and practice – central tenets of our Iterative Mindset Method™.

Here are some more tips for sticking to your Fresh Tri intentions:

  • Make a visual reminder like a vision board or calendar. Visual cues keep your intentions top of mind.
  • Tell a friend or community about your intentions. Social support boosts motivation and accountability.
  • Celebrate small wins. Acknowledge each step, not just the endpoint. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
  • Be flexible. If something isn’t working, change your approach rather than giving up.
  • Focus on how your intentions make you feel. Connect to the emotions that fuel sustainable change.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself along the way. Remember why you set this intention in the first place – to feel more energized, balanced, and joyful.

You have the power to design a life that reflects your unique values and needs. At Fresh Tri, we’re here to support you each step of the way with tools, inspiration, and community.
