Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men in the United States. Yet shockingly, about one in four men have never been screened for this potentially deadly disease. This lack of preventative care is emblematic of a larger crisis—too often, men’s health issues are brushed aside and left unaddressed until it’s too late.

That’s why advocacy for men’s health is so crucial. It means boldly breaking the silence, raising awareness, and rallying around resources and policy changes to empower men to prioritize their well-being.

At Fresh Tri, we’re passionate about this cause because we believe every man deserves to live their healthiest, most vibrant life possible. This Men’s Health Month, let’s come together as champions for men’s health and make lasting change happen through advocacy and action.

Why Advocacy for Men’s Health Matters

Many of the statistics surrounding men’s health are alarming, but they don’t have to stay that way. The simple act of creating a culture of open conversation, where men feel comfortable talking about their struggles without fear or shame, can make a world of difference.

Advocacy is about raising awareness, yes, but it’s so much more than that. It’s letting men know they aren’t alone in their health battles, providing resources and support, and ensuring they can have better access to quality healthcare and preventative screenings.

It’s giving men the tools to be proactive about their mental health, too—an issue that has reached crisis levels due to societal pressures that discourage vulnerability.

What many men may not realize is that men’s health advocacy goes beyond just caring for themselves. When men take charge of their well-being, it empowers them to be positive forces and role models in the lives of those they love most: their sons, brothers, fathers, and friends.

Their advocacy influences generations by setting an example of what it means to be a healthy, well-rounded man, shaping the future in powerful ways.

Taking Action: Strategies for Advocacy

Words are important, but actions speak volumes. There are so many ways, big and small, that you can start advocating for men’s health today:

  • Social Media: Use platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram to raise awareness about men’s health issues using hashtags like #MensHealthMonth or #MensHealthAwareness. Share resources, personal stories about your own health journey and struggles, and information about local events. Social media is a megaphone for critical conversations.
  • Organize Local Events: Work with your community to host things like health screenings, fitness challenges, mental health workshops, or awareness walks/runs. Events focused on education and prevention can create powerful bonding experiences for the men in your area.
  • Volunteer: There are many incredible non-profit organizations solely dedicated to men’s health, like the Men’s Health Network and ZERO Cancer. They rely on passionate volunteers to help further their missions through events, fundraising, and boots-on-the-ground efforts.

No action is too small when it comes to advocacy. Speaking up and engaging with the issue in any way helps elevate these crucial conversations to inspire change. It gives other men the courage to start prioritizing their well-being without feeling shame or weakness. It lets them know they have an entire community of support rallying behind their health journeys.

Prioritize Men’s Health All Year Long

Far too many men suffer from preventable illnesses simply because they didn’t make their health a priority soon enough. The heartbreaking consequences could have been avoided by creating an environment where men feel comfortable taking charge of their well-being, seeking care without judgment, and being proactive about prevention.

It’s up to all of us to be the catalysts for this positive change. We must lend our voices, our platforms, our time, and our energy to empower men with the resources and support they deserve. The collective power of people who care can reshape cultural narratives, drive policy reform, and save lives.

So this Men’s Health Month, let’s become advocates in every sense of the word. Educate the men in your life about their health risks and remind them how much you need them around for years to come. Speak up on their behalf so they don’t suffer in silence. And most of all, keep showing up and taking action to break down the barriers keeping men from embracing their well-being. Because investing in men’s health means investing in all the people who make our lives and communities whole. There’s no better cause to fight for.
